USDA SETS DATES FOR HONEY PACKERS AND IMPORTERS PROMOTION AND RESEARCH PROGRAM REFERENDUM

WASHINGTON, Feb. 29, 2008 -- The U.S. Department of Agriculture today announced that it will conduct a referendum from April 2-16, 2008, for eligible first handlers and importers of honey and honey products to establish a new national Honey Packers and Importers Research, Promotion, Consumer Education and Industry Information Order.

The program will be implemented if favored by a majority of the first handlers and importers, and a majority of volume voting in the referendum. Voters consist of first handlers and importers of 250,000 or more pounds of honey per calendar year.

If implemented, the program would be administered by a 10-member board and its alternates who will be responsible for carrying out activities intended to strengthen the position of the honey industry in the marketplace. In addition, the board will work to develop, maintain and expand domestic and foreign markets for honey and honey products.

You can find all the details regarding the referendum  at:

With the almonds beginning to bloom I thought this story, while not new, might be appropriate and perhpas

still new to some.

Almonds found to help regulate appetite, caloric intake

Wednesday, October 25, 2006 by: Jessica Fraser        almonds

(NaturalNews) Daily consumption of almonds may trigger feelings of satiety and help reduce overall calorie intake, according to new research by scientists from Purdue University.

Dieters often find it difficult to regulate their appetite, but a new study recently presented at the North American Association for the Study of Obesity's annual meeting indicates that almonds may help stop unhealthy snacking by enhancing feelings of fullness between meals.

News Release 2-7-08
As posted earlier the funding for the USDA research facility at Weslaco, Texas is in consideration for being  cut in the President's proposed budget for the year 2009..  It is important that we all let congress know that now is not the time for reducing budgets in the area of agriculture and especially bee research as the future of our nation's food supply is dependent upon finding answers to the problems that face the honeybee and all pollinators that are in decline.   In latest news you can click on Letter to your Congressman and it will take you to that page where you can find the address and contact information for your Senators and Representatives.    We need to act now to help protect  all of the valuable research that this facility does. For the long list of research that this facility is currently working on visit:

Keep Bees, Naturally!     thumb-bee1

By M.E.A. McNeil

Mother Earth News

Jan/Feb 2008

Enjoy the sweet rewards of beekeeping. Here’s what you need to know to keep bees — using natural methods — and harvest fresh, delicious honey from your own back yard.

If you’d like to benefit your garden and community and offer a treat to your taste buds, consider keeping a couple of beehives. As honeybees gather pollen and nectar to make 50 gallons or more of pure, wild honey per hive, they pollinate crops nearby — and up to four miles away. This pollination is essential for good yields for some flowering crops. Best of all, honeybees require only simple management once the hives are up and running.

News Release 1-9-08                  Picture above from the 2008 National Beekeeping Conference

The lines were long but everyone seemed to be coping with the delays and the few minor inconveniences to

have a chance to paricipate in the largest beekeeping convention to happen in many years.   There was at least

a dozen different media teams attempting to cover the buzz that was taking place in Sacramento.     Mark Brady,

AHPA preesident addresses the convention on Wednesday morning with the traditional welcomes to California

and the introductions of those that were bringing the event to fruition.   On the right is Mr. Binford Weaver in the middle

talking with Pat Heitkam of Heitkams Honey Bees, one of the largest producer of queen bees in America.

There were crowded rooms but many stood without complaining to listen in on the latest on CCD and reports from the

bee labs on what was of the latest concern for the honeybee.

You can help the bees by becoming a backyard beekeeper or by keeping a few more hives

or by helping someone else become a beekeeper.  Did you know that there are half as many

beekeepers as there were 20 years ago?   It is without a doubt the most fascinating hobby you

could possibly have.   For more on this and viewing the Silence of the Bees which was aired

on PBS on October 28th just visit the following link.
